Una scultura: la Sophora Prostrata

A sculpture: the Sophora Prostrata

A little wonder that looks sculpted by an artist, with its winding, zigzagging branches forming a unique and fascinating structure.

It's no coincidence that it is often chosen as a plant to decorate modern and minimalist environments, where its sculptural appearance immediately catches the eye. You will surely have noticed it in "catalog" photos, placed on a piece of furniture for sale!

Origins and characteristics of Sophora Prostrata

Sophora Prostrata "Little Baby", native to New Zealand, is a shrub belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is known as "Kowhai nana" to highlight its small and compact shape compared to other Sophora species (or to the one native to New Zealand). The Sophora "Little Baby" is in fact a miniature cultivar of the original New Zealand species.

Its main characteristics are three:

  • Thin, twisted, zigzagging branches, giving it an architectural appearance.
  • Along the slender branches grow tiny oval leaves, of a bright and intense green, which create a wonderful contrast with the new leaves, of a light and delicate green.
  • The flowering of Sophora, which occurs in spring, is equally particular. Sophora Prostrata produces small to medium-sized yellow flowers with a distinctive "beak" shape.

These are precisely the strong points of this miniature species, perfect for those who love particular shapes and plants with a strong decorative impact.

How to care for Sophora Prostrata

☀️

Light

It loves abundant light! It is therefore good to place it in a well-lit spot, both indoors and outdoors (where it can be placed in direct light).

💧

Watering

Sophora does not like waterlogging, but it does not like to be left dry for too long. It should therefore be watered when the substrate is almost completely dry.

🌱

Substrate

It prefers a well-draining and light substrate. Aroid mix is perfect for it, to avoid waterlogging that would compromise the health of its roots.

🌡️

Temperatures

Sophora is resistant to cold and low temperatures. However, it is best not to go below 5°C, where it might start to suffer.

✂️

Pruning

This little sculpture does not require frequent pruning. Branches can be shortened to maintain the desired shape, also stimulating the growth of new shoots.
