Moderate Temperatures
The optimal temperature range for cultivation is between 15°C and 25°C. They fear intense cold: in winter, it is advisable not to expose them to temperatures below 10°C. In spring and summer, they can be moved outdoors to a balcony, in a semi-shaded area.
Moderate Humidity
Despite being tropical plants, they adapt surprisingly well to indoor climates. They do not require the extreme humidity demanded by other species (like Alocasias), but they will benefit from a cool room and adequate ventilation to prevent stagnant, stuffy air around their roots.
How to Water Tradescantias and Avoid Waterlogging
The stems and leaves of Tradescantias are quite fleshy and act as small water reservoirs. This makes the plant tolerant to short periods of drought but extremely sensitive to overwatering and prolonged waterlogging, which quickly leads to root and basal rot.
- Check the Soil: Before watering, insert a finger into the substrate. Water only when the first 2-3 superficial centimeters feel dry to the touch.
- Water from below or with precision: For very dense varieties like Nanouk or Pink Paradise, water the soil directly or use bottom watering, avoiding wetting the leaves too much to prevent fungi and mold.
- Rapid Drainage: Ensure the pot has excellent drainage holes and always empty the saucer approximately 15-20 minutes after watering. The roots should never remain submerged in water.
⚠️ The Danger of Basal Rot: If you notice that the stems in contact with the soil become brown, soft, and translucent, it is a clear sign of overwatering. In this case, immediately reduce watering and cut the healthy stems for propagation to save the plant before the rot spreads.

You can place the cuttings in water (they will produce roots in less than a week) or plant them directly in the same pot as the mother plant to make it immediately denser and more lush.
