Pilea Peperomioides: assorted variegated coins version
The Pilea Peperomioides is a beauty with a "round charm", with its unmistakable perfectly round leaves. It is thanks to them that it earns the nicknames "money plant" or "UFO plant".
A beauty that is already a marvel in itself, let alone if these coins were to become variegated: a wonderful madness!
Without further ado, let's get to know the two variegated varieties!
Pilea peperomioides: main characteristics
Originally from China, Pilea Peperomioides is a plant of the Urticaceae family famous for:
- Leaves: round and thick, arranged on long petioles that make them appear suspended.
- Growth: compact and neat.
- Ease of propagation: it quickly produces suckers at the base, which can be detached from the mother plant and repotted. Additionally, it can be easily propagated by leaf, using Chilean sphagnum to aid rooting.
- Minimal design: its minimal and elegant shape makes it an icon of botanical design.
Variegated coins: Pilea Peperomioides at its best
The "Mojito" variety is recognized by its leaves mottled with different shades of green and a delicate cream color. The variegation is irregular, changing from leaf to leaf and from plant to plant, making each specimen unique. Its coloring resembles a fresh Mojito drink, hence its singular name.
The Sugar variety is distinguished by its leaves dotted with small, irregular white specks, resembling sugar crystals. Furthermore, what makes it unique and fascinating is undoubtedly the shape of its leaves: the margin is wavy and irregular, offering a chic and alternative version of the perfectly round leaf that has always characterized the Pilea Peperomioides.
Light
It loves excellent indirect bright exposure. Variegated varieties need more light to keep the contrasts of their leaves vibrant and evident.
Watering
Pilea is a semi-succulent plant. Having water reserves, it hates waterlogging! Therefore, it should be watered when the substrate is dry, avoiding excess water.
Substrate
Use a light and draining mix; the Tropical mix is ideal thanks to its composition.
Temperature and humidity
It prefers a temperature between 15°C and 25°C, with low tolerance to intense cold and drafts.
Propagation: the most fun part!
Propagating Pilea peperomioides is very easy, and it can be done in two different ways:
- Suckers: Pilea quickly produces suckers at the base: you can detach them from the mother plant and repot them separately, to get more small plants.
- Leaf propagation: Pilea is one of the few plants that can be propagated by leaf. Just ask the mother plant for permission and detach a leaf! You can choose to place it in water, or in a small box using sphagnum moss.
