Begonia Amphioxus: guida completa per la cura della star del Borneo

Begonia Amphioxus: The Complete Care Guide for the Star of Borneo

Begonia Amphioxus is a fascinating and rare species belonging to the Begoniaceae family. It is native to the state of Sabah, Malaysia, in northern Borneo.

Characteristics of Begonia Amphioxus

This small marvel stands out for its unique foliage. It has small, thin, lanceolate and jagged leaves, with red polka dots unevenly covering the entire leaf surface. Adding to this already wonderful picture are the red edges that enclose the acid green/olive green leaf.

Natural Habitat

In its natural habitat, Begonia Amphioxus grows in shaded areas on limestone substrates (both at the base of cliffs and on top of rock outcrops). In Borneo, temperatures are warm throughout the year, and humidity levels are quite high (approximately a minimum of 65% and a maximum of 90%). These are, after all, the reasons for its wonderful biodiversity. Returning to our topic, these specific conditions directly influence its cultivation needs in domestic environments.

How to care for Begonia Amphioxus

To successfully cultivate this mini jewel of a Begonia, it is necessary to follow some precautions, trying to "replicate" the conditions of its habitat and doing your best to make it feel at home.

1

Light

It prefers excellent indirect light exposure. Direct sunlight can cause leaf scorch.

2

Temperature

The ideal temperature ranges between 18°C and 24°C.

3

Humidity

It requires a high level of humidity, preferably above 60%.

4

Watering

Begonia Amphioxus does not like to dry out. The substrate should therefore always be kept moist, but not waterlogged. It is essential to avoid water stagnation to prevent root rot.

5

Substrate

A well-draining mix that retains adequate moisture is essential to ensure the health of the roots and the small Begonia. You can combine it with the Begoniaceae mix!

Avoiding problems with Begonia Amphioxus: the factor not to underestimate

Begonia Amphioxus is not a difficult plant; it is just demanding regarding the humidity level: it is uncompromising and unforgiving on that.

But, fortunately, this demand is easily manageable. If you don't want to have problems with it, pay attention to the humidity: the higher it is, the happier it will be.

A short list of tips for best managing the Begonia Amphioxus/humidity combination:

  • Humidifier: Among the simplest solutions, using a humidifier definitely stands out. You can place your Begonia Amphioxus nearby.
  • Greenhouse: You can use a small display greenhouse and place it inside.
  • Arrangements: These are undoubtedly among my favorite solutions, and I highly recommend them.
1
Opt for cultivating Begonia Amphioxus inside a small glass capsule. You can choose to dedicate it entirely to her: it will be a true little jewel.
2
Terrarium: You can create a terrarium, combining it with companions that have the same needs!
3
Bowl: You can opt for a bowl arrangement. This option is an "open-air" solution but, thanks to the substrate and live moss (to be misted often), it will still maintain its beloved humidity. Remember that you can also combine it with a humidifier if needed!

Upon reflection, this requirement of Begonia Amphioxus allows it to be cultivated in many wonderful different ways: find your favorite and challenge yourself. This little jewel will make you fall in love!
